    Ododo Says Prof. Salisu Ogbo’s Achievements Earned Him VC Appointment

    Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has said the appointment of Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman as Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, was based on his “remarkable achievements” as Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.

    The governor stated this at the 5th combined convocation ceremony of the polytechnic, held at the weekend in Lokoja. He was represented by the Deputy Governor, Salifu Oyibo.Governor Ododo said Professor Ogbo’s tenure was marked by effective leadership and project completion, noting that no inherited project was abandoned. He highlighted the completion of the 7,000-seat lecture theatre, a project abandoned for over 16 years, as evidence of prudent resource management and continuity in governance.

    He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to merit-based leadership in tertiary institutions, stressing that performance and competence, rather than zoning, would guide appointments.The governor also outlined other interventions at the polytechnic, including the installation of solar-powered streetlights, fencing of the Itakpe Campus to prevent encroachment, and the deployment of CCTV cameras to enhance campus security.“ These measures reflect our zero-tolerance stance on criminality and our commitment to a safe learning environment,” he said.

    In his remarks, the outgoing Rector, Professor Ogbo, said the convocation marked a turning point for the institution after years of irregular ceremonies, symbolising restored academic stability.He urged stakeholders to extend the same support to the new Rector, Professor Sanusi Satihu Avidime, to consolidate the gains achieved.

    Gov. Ododo Reaffirms Commitment to Education at PAAU 7th Combined Convocation

    Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education as a foundation for human capital development and sustainable national growth.Governor Ododo spoke at the 7th Combined Convocation Ceremony and 25th anniversary of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, where he described education as central to nation-building beyond physical infrastructure.“

    While roads and buildings are important, it is knowledge, character, and discipline that truly build enduring nations,” the governor said. He paid tribute to the late founder of the institution, Prince Abubakar Audu, describing him as a visionary whose investment in education continues to shape generations.

    A major highlight of the address was the full reactivation and accreditation of the university’s MBBS programme, which had been dormant for 12 years. Ododo said the state government has also provided infrastructure, equipment, and manpower to support medical training. The governor added that his administration remains committed to student welfare, noting the continuation of bursary schemes and support initiatives to reduce financial barriers to education.

    He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strengthening the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), citing its impact on infrastructure, research, and staff development at PAAU. Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Abdul Aguye, said all academic programmes have maintained full accreditation for five consecutive years. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Marietu Tenuche disclosed that over 27,000 graduates, including postgraduate degree holders, were produced during the period covered by the convocation.

    Abubakar Audu University not part of ASUU strike — Dean

    Lecturers of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) on Wednesday said they would not join the warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

    Prof. Ogunbiyi Joseph, Dean, Faculty of Education, PAAU, made the declaration in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Anyigba, Kogi.

    Joseph said the university was not part of ASUU warning strike which started on Tuesday.

    “As Lecturers of Prince Abubakar Audu University, we are not part of ASUU and can’t join the strike.

    “Secondly, it’s against the principles of the University’s visitor, the Kogi Governor, Dr Yahaya Bello.

    “But one good thing about the Governor is that whatever the Federal Government approves for ASUU, after their fight, he (Bello) will implement it for us without us being part of the fight.

    “I want to categorically tell you that is what we are enjoying here in PAAU, which also explains the reason why there is no disruption in our academic calendar,” he said.

    The Dean noted that during the 6th convocation of the varsity, Gov. Bello granted it total financial autonomy as regards to its internally generated revenue as part of the governor’s goodwill to the institution.

    On the governor’s final approval of the implementation of the N30, 000 minimum wage, Joseph said it was a bold and right step.

    Joseph, who is also the Head of Department (HOD), Department of Social Sciences, said the approval was part of progress by the state government.

    He explained that the new wage would go a long way in cushioning the effects of some of the problems civil servants in the state faced.

    “The only problem we are having in this country is the implementation of our many beautiful policies and programmes to stimulate growth and development.

    “I wish to call on the state government to keep to its promise and implement the minimum wage as expected to ginger workers to be more efficient and effective in their workplaces,” Joseph said.

    Prince Abubakar Audu University Convocate 19,000 Graduands

    19,000 Graduands of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, were over the weekend awarded their first degrees in various disciplines during the 6th convocation ceremony of the institution.

    Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche, said that the convocation ceremony was a combined one beginning from 2016 to date.

    She explained that the inability to organise convocation ceremony for too long was due to Covid-19, pandemic.

    She disclosed that the National Universities Commission, (NUC) has accredited 48 programmes offered in the University, representing 100 per cent accreditation.

    Professor Tenuche noted that the recent ranking of universities in Nigeria by NUC indicated that Prince Abubakar Audu University emerged one of 25 out of the 170 public and private universities in the country that have full accreditation for all courses offered.
    The VC also disclosed that in the last three years (2019, 2020 and 2021) respectively, the Faculty of Law of the institution at the Nigeria Law School, has produced three First Class graduates, a feat she attributed to quality teaching, research and learning in the Faculty and the entire University.

    Speaking on the effort of the management of the university in curbing cultism and other security challenges, the Vice Chancellor, disclosed that the institution has entered into collaboration with the vigilante outfit in Anyigba town to help in tackling criminalities in and around the campus.

    She added that the effort was further complemented by the assistance the University received from the Army and the Police, assuring that the collaboration will continue to be sustained in the interest of the university.

    Professor Tenuche who is the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University, lamented that since 2015 the institution was not able to hold convocation for graduands, noting that the ceremony was scheduled to hold in 2020 but was stalled by Covid-19 pandemic.

    Graduands during ceremony were awarded First Degrees in the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts and Humanities, Education, Law, Management Sciences, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. “Prizes and Awards were given to the deserving graduands in Faculties and Departments” she said.

    Governor Yahaya Bello in a speech delivered on his behalf by his Deputy, Edward Onoja at the event, expressed the readiness of the present administration in Kogi state to position the University to attain its high potential.

    The Governor explained that the renaming of the University after the late former Governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu was aimed at giving honour to whom it is due in recognition of his legacies when he ruled the state twice, from 1991 to 1993 as civilian Governor.

    Bello assured that his administration is equally ready to do the needful in order to guarantee conducive learning environment in the University.

    We’ll Fight Cultism, Execute Viable Projects At Prince Abubakar Audu University – Vice Chancellor

    The Vice Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche has vowed to continue to fight against cultism and other vices to boost academic excellence in the institution.

    She warned that anybody caught in the act irrespective of status would be shown the way out from the University and also be made to face the full wrath of the law.

    The Vice Chancellor who gave the warning at the 6th Convocation Press Briefing held at the University Auditorium over the weekend also promised to embark on massive execution of viable projects that would enhance quality education.

    Professor Tenuche disclosed that since assumption of office, one year ago, she has been able to complete some projects inherited from the previous administrations in the University and also embarked on new ones which she said have been completed.

    According to the VC, some of these projects, are; the asphalt laying of the road linking the Dangana Hostel Junction and Law Faculty, rehabilitation of Prince Abubakar Audu Way with complete asphalt lay in partnership with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), renovation of all Students Hostels and equipping of the Language Laboratory in the Faculty of Education amongst others.

    She said that the enumerated projects have been commissioned by the Executive Governor of Kogi state and Visitor to the University, Yahaya Bello as part of the activities marking the 6th convocation ceremony.

    The VC expressed happiness that in the latest ranking by the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba emerged one of the 25 out of 170 public and Private Universities in Nigeria that have full accreditation of all courses offered.

    “In addition, our result in the last bar examinations showed that all the students of PAAU presented for the Council of Legal Education Bar final examinations, with the exception of one candidate that had carry-out passed.

    Professor Tenuche further stressed her resolve to ensure the security of lives and property in the University as she has engaged both private security outfit and Vigilante Group in partnership to achieve the goal.
