South East Govs Dissociate Nnamdi Kanu From Insecurity In The Region

Governors of the five South East states have commended the efforts of the security agencies in ensuring the return of peace in the region, stressing that normalcy was being incrementally restored as a result of the cooperation of the security agencies with the governments and people of the zone.

The governors disclosed this on Thursday, August 10, in a communiqué read by the Imo State Governor and Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, shortly after the South East Governors’ Forum meeting held at the Enugu State Government House.

The meeting, which was attended by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, and Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, also reiterated the commitment of the Forum to forging a common socio-economic and security cooperation through a summit to be announced at a later date.

The Forum further declared that the perpetrators of insecurity and their sponsors in the region were mere criminals, who should not be dignified as legitimate agitators, but dealt with in line with the provisions of the law.

Also fielding questions from newsmen, Uzodimma, while dissociating the unrest in the region from Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whom he said had since disowned the enforcers of sit-at-home and perpetrators of other crimes who were using his name to commit crime, said the governors of the region would continue to do everything within their powers to sustain the increasing peace and security presently being enjoyed by the South East.

    The communique in part reads

“The Forum firmly resolved to fight insecurity decisively in the region individually and collectively, in partnership with the Federal Government and other Stakeholders. We commend the security agencies for their cooperation thus far and encourage them not to relent.

We wish to state categorically that the perpetrators of the insecurity in our region and their sponsors are criminals and should not be seen as legitimate agitators. Therefore, upon arrest, they should be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land.

The Forum resolved to hold the security and economic summit on a date to be announced soon”.

Secession: Southeast Governors Condemn IPOB, Want United Nigeria

Members of the South East Governors’ Forum have distanced themselves from the agitations of secessionist groups in the region and other parts of the country.

They also condemned the violence that followed the agitations which led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties.

The governors met on Saturday in Enugu State to deliberate on ways to tackle the security challenges and restore peace in the region.

The Chairman of the Forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, spoke on behalf of the governors at the end of the meeting.

“We condemn in totality, the activities of violent secessionist groups in the South East and elsewhere.

“We firmly proclaim that we do not support them, they do not speak for South East.

“The impression that South-East leaders are silent over some of our youths’ agitations for secession is not correct.

“South-East Governors, Ohanaeze President, National Assembly members, notable leaders had come out publicly many times in the past to speak against such agitations.

“In order not to mismanage the unfortunate situation, South-East leaders have set up a committee to engage such youths to stop and allow elders speak to address such fears,” he said.

They appealed to the security agencies to discharge their duties within the rules of engagement and the law.

They also urged members of the National Assembly from the South East to support the creation of state police in the ongoing constitutional amendment.

“We, the Igbos do reaffirm our commitment to one united Nigeria under a platform of justice, equity of rights, fairness, love, and respect for one another.

“The meeting endorsed our South East joint security outfit – Ebubeagu – and asked them to work with security agencies and to respect the rights and privileges of all those living in South East and our visitors,” Governor Umahi said while reading the communique issued at the end of the meeting.

South East Governors Meet Over Attacks In Region, Vow To Tackle Insecurity

Members of the South East Governors’ Forum met on Monday as part of efforts to tackle the rising security challenges in the region.

This follows the incessant attacks that have claimed lives and left several injured in various states in the region, with police stations and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) being the targets in most cases.

At the virtual meeting of the governors, the leaders discussed ways to tackle the security threats in the region and secure the lives of the people.

They vowed to leave no stone unturned in tracking and bringing to justice all those involved in what they described as the armed banditry currently ravaging the South East.

The governors also sympathised with the families of all those who have lost their lives during the moment of violent hostilities in the region.

They, however, appealed to the people to exercise restraint and allow the security agencies to continue with their investigations.

At the meeting, the governors condemned the killing of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak, by gunmen on Sunday while on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

They resolved to stand with the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodima, and the security agencies in their efforts to unravel the masterminds of the killing.

The leaders also commiserated with the immediate family of Gulak, as well as the government and people of Adamawa State over the unfortunate incident.

They noted that the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators would further strengthen the bonds of unity and trust between the people of the South East and their northern counterparts.

The governors thanked their colleagues in the North for their understanding in the face of the killing and give an assurance that the masterminds would be made to face justice.

Governors in the southeast region are currently meeting at the Enugu Government House, in Enugu State.

The meeting may not be unconnected with the rising insecurity in the region.

Another issue that is likely to come up is the domestication of the regional security outfit, code-named Ebube Agu in each of the five states.

The outfit is meant to oversee and monitor the activities of vigilante groups in the southeastern part of the country.

This is the second time, the governors are meeting this month to deliberate on the safety and security of lives and property in the south-eastern region.

The meeting is coming barely 24 hours after gunmen attacked the resident of the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the governor’s village house in the early hours of Saturday.

Commissioner of Information in the state, Declan Emelumba, confirmed the attack.

He explained that the attack was repelled by a combined team of security operatives attached to the house.

“Gallant security operatives this morning repelled an attack on the Omuma country home of the governor of Imo State, Sen Hope Uzodimma,” he said via a statement.

“At about 9 am today, Saturday, April 24th, a group of hoodlums numbering about 15 driving in a motorcade of three vehicles accompanied by a tipper loaded with used tyres, stormed the country home of the governor in Omuma,  Oru East  LGA and attempted to burn down the house.

“However, vigilant security operatives attached to the Governor’s house successfully repelled the attack and consequently minimised the damage they had planned to unleash.

“In the crossfire that ensued a few casualties were recorded.  Preliminary investigation suggests that the foiled attack may have been politically sponsored.”

The commissioner noted that security agencies have been asked to investigate the incident, promptly apprehend the sponsors and their agents and bring them to justice.
