Palliative: Gov Alia Lauded Over Approving Free WAEC, NECO Registration Fee

    By Isaac Kertyo, Makurdi

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has been commended over approving free WAEC and NECO registration fee for the 2023-2024 academic session for all government approved schools.

Acting Executive Secretary, Teaching Service Board, (TSB), Benue State, Mr Ahule Tsea, who gave the commendation in an interview with Day Break in Makurdi, said this will cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on parents.

” The approval of free WAEC and NECO registration fee for 3023-2024 academic session by the Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, will alleviate the sufferings parents pass through during the examinations. So what the Governor has done is quite commendable.

I call on staff and students to redouble their efforts to ensure that what the Governor has done will not be in vein. He deserves commendation for the steps he has taken so far. It will eradicate examination malpractice in our schools.”

While reacting to a question posed to him regarding criticisms by individuals who feel the funds should be used for infrastructural development, the Acting Executive Secretary argued that the students who are going to sit for the examinations, if they pass they will go to institutions of higher learning to develop themselves.

Continuing, Mr Tsea noted that this is another way of developing human beings, averring that those criticising should be condemned totally. ” What the Governor has done is in order. For those of us in the education sector, we commend Governor Alia for his good educational policies.”

Mr Tsea appealed to the Governor to employ more qualified teachers to feel the existing vacancies in our schools. He equally called on the Governor to provide vehicles for the board to enable them monitor activities in schools effectively.

  • Fresh WAEC forgery case plan to distract Gov. Eno, says Rev Peters

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

Worried about the unending investigations and litigations against Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom over alleged forgery of his WAEC result,a Cleric of the African Church, Rev Richard Peters has called for restraint inorder to avoid further distraction in the pursuit of the Governor’s Arise Agenda.

He has also expressed worry that some distractors have continued to make case over a matter that was decided by the Supreme Court in favour of Eno before the 2023 elections.

Against the backdrop of the recent suit at a Lagos High Court in which the police is seeking a fresh order to compel the Heads of WAEC to surrender Eno’s records to restart investigations of the same certificate, Peters told newsmen in Uyo on Friday that the action was politically motivated and detestable.

According to him, “the new order for fresh investigation has nothing to do with justice but rather further mudsling of his character, integrity and dent of the image of the person of Pastor Umo Eno, a serious propaganda and desecration of the exalted office of the governor of Akwa ibom state.

“The whole essence of these onslaught is to weaken him and completely distract him from governance which he was recently elected to serve by the people and make him fail as a governor but they have failed.

“The Umo Eno we know don’t fail for such gimmicks, In the build up to the 2023 elections, he was faced with over 12 litigations in the various courts over similar and sundry issues, he expressed confidence in the ability of the judiciary to bring the truth and finally he triumphed.”

The good governance advocate further highlighted that, “Gov Umo Eno had earlier said before his clearance by the supreme court on the same certificate matter that if found guilty of forging his WAEC certificates, that he will not only quit politics but also his pastoral calling which is a bold statement from a man who has nothing to hide from anyone.”

He described the unending investigation and probe as a calculated distractions as Akwa ibom people would not judge his administration by it stressing that “even if foreign police are deployed for same purpose, the result will not be different from the earlier results.”

The cleric appealed to concerned Akwa ibom people at home and in diaspora to rise against the smear campaign and maligning of the person and office of their governor and advised those doing so to have a rethink as those sympathetic to the governor would use every legal means to protect him.

“Whatever legal means it takes us to stop further damage on the personality of the governor must be done. Why fresh investigation on a matter that transcended Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and ended in Supreme Court in favor of Umo Eno just few months ago.

“This is a pure smear campaign and no longer seeking justice as the supreme court has long dished out justice. They are now operating on the realms of smear campaigns.

“What further evidence are they looking for from the same WAEC, is it to delist Umo Eno’s name from those who took the exams that year? I am a concerned Akwa ibom citizen and together we will resist further mudsling of the character and integrity of our governor.” Peters concluded.

  • WAEC: 30m WASSCE Candidates to Access, Share Originals of Digital Certificates

WAEC: 30m WASSCE Candidates to Access, Share Originals of Digital Certificates

About 30 million certificate holders who had taken the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as far back as 1999 till date, will be able to access and share the original copies of their digital certificates from anywhere in the world, the Head of National Office ( HNO) Nigeria, Mr. Patrick Areghan, has said.

Areghan disclosed this yesterday in Lagos, at the launch of WAEC digital certificate platform, that will enable users to access, share, request and confirm their certificates.

Those of 1970 to 1998, he noted, will be attended to shortly.

To assess, confirm and share the certificates, users will have to pay; N 7,500, N5,000 and N3,500, respectively. Areghan said the platform will also be used to recover candidates’ forgotten/lost examination numbers, adding that attestation which used to cost N60,000, has been reduced to N7,500.

“We have sensitise over 1,000 institutions in Nigeria and also talked to the embassies on the digital certification.”

He emphasised on the importance of technology in achieving the feat, and why Nigeria is starting ahead of Ghana, saying that the council was evolving to meet the demands of a changing world.

According to him,” we have migrated from physical registration of candidates to online registration; online verification of results and online result printouts, etc. The development of the new digital certificate platform is in line with WAEC’s continuous record of meeting global needs by using cutting-edge technology to improve candidates’ experiences as they seek to continue their education.

“Their mobility is of utmost importance to the West African Examinations Council. With the application of technology, candidates can get their results within 45 days and we will continue to innovate. Nigeria is the largest member of WAEC with over 1.6 million candidates taking the exam. Definitely, Nigeria should lead the way ahead of other African countries.”

The HNO added that the new digital platform, was developed in conjunction with security technology providers, and is being implemented to streamline the issuance and verification of certificates from all over the world.

“The platform involves mobile and web-based application that is designed specifically for candidates, individuals, institutions and organisations. It holds powerful features that enable users to access, share, request and confirm certificates. It is also used to recover candidates’ forgotten/lost examination numbers.”

While expressing confidence about the ground-breaking digital certificate platform to revolutionise the way people interact with the WAEC certificate and drastically improve the mobility of talented students as they move forward in life, the HNO listed some of the benefits of the platform to include; generating and sharing certificates, security/data protection, portability, authenticity, improved confirmation processes, as well as printability.

“Universities, institutions and organisations can now enjoy a seamless, secure and fast confirmation process with the digital platform. The platform also allows for bulk confirmation of certificates at once. This saves valuable administration costs and time. Limitation experienced with the paper certificates is that it cannot be replaced as original certificates are only issued once. Going digital, your original certificate is now available on demand; and the risk of loss or damage is now eliminated,” Areghan stated.

The WAEC Digital Certificate Platform is available via www.waec.org.The application can be accessed on mobile and web platforms.
