Tension in Kano: Gov Yusuf Defies Kwankwasiyya Leadership

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Political tensions within the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano have surged as Governor Abba Yusuf distances himself from his mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. The rift stems from Kwankwaso’s continued control over significant party decisions, including the appointment of local government chairmen, without involving the governor.

Sources close to the governor reveal that Yusuf respects Kwankwaso but seeks independence in his leadership. “Abba wants to establish his authority,” one insider explained. “Though Kwankwaso imposed ninety percent of the commissioners, Abba still works with them to maintain peace.”

The last meeting between the two leaders occurred during Kwankwaso’s birthday celebrations on October 21. Since then, they have not communicated. Governor Yusuf declined to attend several meetings called by Kwankwaso at his residences in Kano and Abuja. “He kept Kwankwaso waiting until midnight and never showed up,” the source added.

Kwankwaso’s attempts to reach the governor through various channels have proven ineffective. He even sent an emissary to demand the dismissal of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), viewed as a key figure in the governor’s rebellion. Despite Kwankwaso’s insistence, Yusuf ignored the directive to remove the SSG.

On October 14, Hashimu Dungurawa, the NNPP chairman in Kano, announced the dismissal of the SSG and the commissioner for Transport over alleged anti-party activities. Meanwhile, many high-profile figures within the NNPP, including lawmakers and commissioners, are reportedly aligning with Governor Yusuf, with some even considering a switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
