Kano is gripped by palpable tension as heavily armed security operatives have taken control of the Emir’s palace in the ancient city.
Although authorities have yet to provide an official explanation, the development may be linked to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s plans to host discussions on Nigeria’s economy. The meeting was reportedly set to focus on the contentious tax reform bills, with experts and religious clerics expected to attend. The Emir had also planned to advise clerics on sermon topics for Friday prayers.
There is speculation that the action could also be connected to the Emir’s appointment of a new District Head for Bichi. The Bichi Emirate was downgraded to second-class status under the current administration.
Despite the heavy police presence and anti-riot vehicles, the Emir emerged from his residential quarters on horseback. He proceeded to the palace to hold his usual sessions.
Efforts to reach the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo, were unsuccessful, as he was reportedly at the airport to receive the Vice President.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Baffa Bichi, informed journalists that the Commissioner for Information would release an official statement addressing the situation.
