The World Must Unite Against US Tariffs, Says Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has called on the internatioChinaNigerianal community to unite against what he described as arbitrary trade tariffs imposed by the United States, warning of their detrimental impact on global economic stability.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Ambassador Yu criticized the U.S. tariffs, stating they violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, infringe upon the legitimate rights of other nations, undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system, and destabilize the global economic order.

“The U.S. tariffs will fail to achieve their intended goals. Instead, they will drive inflation, weaken America’s industrial foundation, spark financial market volatility, and elevate the risk of a global economic recession,” Yu said.

“The international community must stand together to defend our shared interests. Opposing U.S. tariff abuses is a stand for multilateralism, fairness, and justice.”

Ambassador Yu also reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with Nigeria and expanding market access for African nations.

He stressed that China and Nigeria have a strong trade relationship with bilateral trade consistently reaching approximately $22 billion, one of the highest in Africa.

“China is committed to increasing imports of Nigerian goods, paving the way for enhanced economic cooperation,” Yu said.

“We are ready to collaborate with Nigeria to implement the outcomes of the FOCAC Summit and the agreements reached by our leaders, fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.”

The envoy noter that China has pledged to grant zero-tariff treatment on 100% of product categories for all least-developed countries with diplomatic ties to China, including 33 African nations.

“This initiative reflects China’s dedication to transforming its vast market into opportunities for African countries,” he added.
