Tinubu Appoints Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

By   Milcah   Tanimu

President Bola Tinubu has named Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army. This decision follows Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja’s temporary unavailability.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, highlighted Oluyede’s extensive experience in a statement. At 56, he has built a distinguished military career and previously served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna. He started his military journey as a second lieutenant in 1992 and became a Major General in September 2020.

Oluyede and Lagbaja share a strong professional relationship as both are alumni of the 39th Regular Course. Throughout his career, Oluyede has held several leadership roles. He served as a Platoon Commander and Adjutant at the 65 Battalion, Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.

The new acting COAS actively participated in critical military operations. He contributed to the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) mission in Liberia. He also led Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi and commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade during Operation HADIN KAI in the North East.

Oluyede has received numerous awards, including the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award. These accolades reflect his commitment to national security and military excellence.

In his personal life, Major General Oluyede is married and has three children. His appointment aims to ensure continuity in leadership within the Nigerian Army. Tinubu expects Oluyede’s experience and proven track record to help maintain the Army’s readiness during this transitional period.
