Tinubu Approves 100Km Stretch of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Through Edo State

Umahi praises Gov. Okpebholo, contractor CBC for infrastructure efforts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the inclusion of Edo State in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, with a 100-kilometre stretch now set to pass through the state.Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, announced the approval during the Edo State Independence Gala Night held at the Government House, Benin City, on Wednesday. He explained that while the original alignment of the 700km highway excluded Edo State, the extension approved by President Tinubu now increases the route to 750km.“

The President called me and said this project must pass from Lagos to Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. That is why we are here. Your Excellency, the President has given you 100 kilometres by two of the coastal highway,” Umahi stated.Umahi commended Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, for intervening in sections of the Benin-Sapele-Warri road, describing the stretch as a death trap for motorists. He also praised China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CBC), the contractor handling some portions of the road, for the quality of work delivered, while urging them to intensify efforts and work round the clock to ensure timely completion.

On his part, Governor Okpebholo expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for including Edo State in the landmark highway project and for prioritising improvements on federal roads across the state. He described the move as evidence of the President’s commitment to the welfare of Edo people.“ Few days ago, I drove through this axis and what I saw almost made me weep. Our people are crying out for this road to be fixed. If I do my part and you do your part, no one will criticise our President,” the governor said.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to tackle infrastructure challenges in Edo State, while commending Minister Umahi for his responsiveness and innovative approach to road construction. Okpebholo also urged Edo people to support President Tinubu’s development agenda and re-election bid in 2027.
