Top 10 African Countries with the Largest Population in 2023

The global population continues to grow, with over 140 million infants born each year. According to the United Nations’ 2022 World Population Prospects report, the world population is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and stabilize at 10.4 billion by 2080 until 2100.

While the pace of population growth has been gradually slowing, it is still projected to continue until around 2100. Notably, the planet experienced a drop in population growth below 1% for the first time since 1950 in 2020. This decline in growth rate has been ongoing since the 1970s, calculated over five-year intervals.

A significant portion of the world’s projected population expansion between now and 2050 is expected to come from just eight countries, five of which are African nations: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Africa, as the world’s fastest-growing economy, boasts the youngest population of any region. This demographic projection presents both economic opportunities and challenges related to the management of population growth.

As of August 1, 2023, Africa’s current population stands at 1,463,378,937, accounting for 17.89% of the total world population, as per the latest United Nations projections.

While the countries in sub-Saharan Africa are projected to witness the largest population growth between 2022 and 2050, some African nations already have substantial populations. Below, we present the top 10 most populated countries in Africa, based on data from WorldPopulationReview:

1. **Nigeria:** With a population of 224,275,240, Nigeria ranks 6th globally.
