US re-evaluates Visa ban as Nigeria achieves 90% requirements

The U.S Government has said it is re-evaluating its ban on some categories of migrant visas for Nigerians having been satisfied with the country’s level of compliance with information sharing and other concerns.

The permanent secretary ministry of foreign affairs Ambassador Mustapha Sulaiman made this known after the inaugural meeting of the U.S/Nigeria forum in Abuja on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump included Nigeria in the travel ban that became effective on February 22, 2020

The travel ban restricts Nigerians and 5 other Nationals from seeking permanent residence in the U.S for not meeting its security and information sharing protocols.

The inclusion of Nigeria was criticized by many people including CNN’s Fareed Zakaria

Nigeria has also continued to make efforts to ensure a reversal of the travel ban by meeting 90 per cent of the conditions in the presidential proclamation.

One of such efforts is the information sharing measure put in place by Nigeria is the proper documentation of stolen and lost passport and other travel documents

According to a 2017 survey, U.S is home to about 348, 000 Nigerians, making Nigeria the top birthplace among African immigrants.
