Wizkid’s ‘Morayo’ Breaks African Streaming Record on Spotify

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Wizkid’s latest album Morayo, released on November 22, 2024, has shattered streaming records on Spotify, achieving the highest opening-week streams for an African artist. The album, featuring collaborations with Asake, Brent Faiyaz, Tiakola, Anais Cardot, and Jasmine Sullivan, has accumulated 42 million streams in just one week. This milestone surpasses the previous record held by Tyla’s Water after only five days.

In addition, Morayo set a new benchmark for African albums, marking the biggest opening day streams on Spotify and becoming the first album to have all tracks exceed 500,000 streams in its first 24 hours. While the album has received widespread praise, some critics have pointed out its reliance on familiar sounds, suggesting it lacks thematic depth.

As Wizkid’s sixth studio album, Morayo continues his reign as a global music icon, solidifying his place among Africa’s top artists.
