World Cup Play-Off: Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Confirms Training Boycott Over Unpaid Allowances

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has confirmed that the Nigerian national team boycotted training on Tuesday in protest over unpaid allowances and bonuses owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The players reportedly refused to take part in their scheduled training session ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup CAF qualifier against Gabon, as they awaited resolution of their outstanding payments.

In a statement shared via his official X (Twitter) handle, Troost-Ekong clarified that the players had not made any new or unreasonable demands, but were simply asking for the settlement of their rightful entitlements.

“Once resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement, claim, or especially demands other than the rightful request written about below is FALSE. All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead,” the captain wrote.

The Super Eagles’ training camp officially opened in Rabat, Morocco, on Monday, with 23 players already in camp as of Tuesday afternoon. Only goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was yet to arrive at the time of the boycott.

Among those present are Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, Olakunle Olusegun, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Benjamin Fredericks, Chidozie Awaziem, and William Troost-Ekong.

Others include Amas Obasogie, Stanley Nwabali, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika, Zaidu Sanusi, Frank Onyeka, Alhassan Yusuf, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Victor Osimhen.

The development has sparked fresh concerns over the NFF’s financial management and its recurring issues with players’ welfare ahead of key international fixtures.
