Oyo Government to Distribute 11,000 Bags of Feed on World Egg Day

In celebration of World Egg Day, the Oyo State Government has unveiled plans to distribute approximately 11,000 bags of poultry feed to support 1,691 poultry farmers in the state. This initiative aims to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal and bolster food security within the region.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, during the World Egg Day event in Ibadan. He emphasized that this distribution is part of the government’s commitment to the welfare of farmers.

Notably, the assistance extends beyond poultry farmers, as 1,691 fish farmers, 2,537 crop farmers, and 2,539 cattle, sheep, and goat farmers will also benefit in the program’s first phase.

Barrister Olaleye highlighted the significance of poultry farmers in ensuring food security and acknowledged the government’s intention to regulate the poultry business. This regulation will enable the government to maintain accurate data on poultry farmers and ensure the production of high-quality poultry products for public consumption.

The commissioner explained that 11,000 bags of feed have been set aside for poultry farmers. Monitoring their activities is crucial, particularly during a period of elevated feed costs, to improve their profitability and promote the standardization of poultry product processing in the state.

In a collaborative effort, the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Oyo State branch, has been called upon to complement the government’s endeavors in enhancing food security. Elder Omidokun Oyekunle, Chairman of PAN, Oyo State branch, emphasized the importance of World Egg Day in promoting daily egg consumption due to its nutritional value.

Oyekunle recognized poultry farming as a means to alleviate poverty and create job opportunities in the state. He expressed PAN’s commitment to working with the government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to eliminate unscrupulous practices in the poultry sector.

As part of the World Egg Day celebration, eggs were donated to pupils of IMG Primary School in Total Garden, Ibadan. Additionally, a public exhibition showcased various foods that can be prepared using eggs at the Iwo-road interchange in the state capital.
