WWII Victory: Global Youth Issue Peace Initiative at Beijing Conference

In a historic gathering at Peking University, representatives of youth from around the globe jointly issued the “World Youth Peace Initiative” during the World Youth Conference for Peace.

The event, hosted by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the All-China Youth Federation, brought together over 3,000 young people from 130 countries and regions, marking a significant step towards fostering global unity and cooperation.

This year commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. Eight decades ago, diverse nations united against the forces of fascism, sacrificing much to secure a future rooted in justice and peace. This victory not only marked the end of a dark chapter in history but also initiated humanity’s journey toward rebuilding a post-war order focused on lasting peace.

As the world faces unprecedented changes, the youth representatives emphasized the urgency of unity in their statement.

“Eighty years later, humanity stands at a crossroads: unity or division, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum,” they declared. The World Youth Peace Initiative serves as a rallying cry for young people to come together, safeguard peace, and promote development for a better future.

The initiative outlines several key calls to action:

-Defenders of World Peace: Young people are urged to cherish and defend peace through concrete actions, oppose wars and violence, and uphold the principles of justice. They are called to safeguard the gains of the Second World War and support the international system centered around the United Nations.

-Pioneers in Promoting Mutual Learning: The initiative encourages youth to foster dialogue and inclusiveness among civilizations, transcending cultural barriers and promoting mutual understanding and friendship.

-Advocates for Win-Win Cooperation: Recognizing that development is vital for peace, young people are called to engage in multilateral cooperation and actively participate in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

-Active Actors in Addressing Climate Change: With climate change posing a significant threat to the planet, youth are urged to collaborate on innovative solutions and improve global ecological governance.

-Promoters of Technology for Good: Young leaders are encouraged to take responsibility in emerging technologies, ensuring that advancements benefit all of humanity and contribute to a just and sustainable future.

Participants at the conference reflected on the lessons of history and the importance of youth engagement in shaping a peaceful future.

“Eighty years ago, our ancestors illuminated the darkness with unity; 80 years later, young people should define the future with action,” the statement added.
