The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Otuoke, Promise Mebine, has described nursing students as critical to the future of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.Mebine made the remarks while receiving students of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences during a campus walk organised as part of activities marking the 2026 Nurses Week.
Represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Chris Onyema, the Vice Chancellor praised the theme of this year’s celebration, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” describing it as timely and relevant.
He urged the students to uphold the values reflected in messages displayed on their placards, including campaigns against drug abuse and cultism, as well as the promotion of healthy living.
Mebine also noted the growing popularity of the university’s nursing programme, revealing that although the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board approved 150 admission slots for the 2026/2027 academic session, the university received more than 7,000 applications.
According to him, the university management is taking steps to strengthen the faculty and position it as a centre of excellence for nursing education.
Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, said the procession was aimed at highlighting the role of nurses in healthcare delivery and community service.The event also featured the announcement of Chukwuanu Divine Onyi Onyechukwu as Miss Florence Nightingale 2026.
