Bayelsa Governor Diri Calls for Peace, Cultural Preservation at Okolede New Yam Festival
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has called on communities across the state to embrace peace and renew efforts to preserve the Ijaw language and cultural heritage.
Represented by Deputy Governor, Pastor Peter Pereotubo Akpe, Diri made the appeal at the grand finale of the Ekpetiama Okolede New Yam Festival in Gbarantoru, Yenagoa Local Government Area. The governor expressed concern over the declining use of the Ijaw language and the reduced interest in traditional farming, describing both as important elements of the Izon cultural identity.
He said the state government had introduced measures, including the training of Ijaw language teachers and compulsory teaching of the language in public primary schools, to preserve the culture for future generations. Diri commended the Ekpetiama Kingdom for sustaining the annual festival and encouraged residents to embrace agriculture to support the state’s food security agenda.
He also urged communities experiencing chieftaincy disputes, including Agudama-Ekpetiama, Tombia and Akaibiri, to pursue peace and unity for sustainable development. Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, described the festival as a celebration of cultural identity and called for continued efforts to preserve local traditions.
The Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Kingdom and Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, King Bubaraye Dakolo, said the festival provides an opportunity for the community to give thanks for successful harvests. He also commended the state government for ongoing development projects and appealed for the construction of a community auditorium in Gbarantoru. The event featured the traditional breaking and eating of the new yam by the monarch, marking the official commencement of the harvest season.

Northern Christian Association Seeks FG’s Explanation Over Religious Project Allocations in 2026 Budget
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called on the Federal Government to explain what it described as disparities in funding for church and mosque projects contained in the proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, the association said reports indicated that about ₦1.91 billion was allocated to seven church-related projects, while approximately ₦6.14 billion was earmarked for 52 mosque-related projects.
The NCA said it was not opposed to government support for religious projects but argued that such allocations should reflect the constitutional principles of fairness, transparency and equal treatment of all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation.
According to the association, the reported disparity has raised concerns among Christians about equity in public spending and the implementation of government policies. Hayab urged the Federal Government to clarify the basis for the allocations, stating that public policies and budgetary decisions should promote national unity and inspire public confidence.
“Government should not establish a system that creates division among citizens or gives the impression that one religious community is more important than another,” the statement said.
The association maintained that its position should not be interpreted as opposition to government engagement with faith-based organisations but as a call for balanced and transparent allocation of public resources. As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the association.
