64th Independence: I Won’t Succumb to Blackmail — Governor Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed that his administration will not be swayed by blackmail from any individual or group, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to delivering good governance and pushing forward the state’s development agenda.

Governor Fubara made this declaration on Tuesday during the 64th Nigerian Independence Day Anniversary Parade at the Government House Arcade in Port Harcourt. He reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening the state’s achievements in peace, governance, and economic growth.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s “bold and pragmatic” economic reforms, aimed at tackling Nigeria’s structural challenges and fostering long-term growth and prosperity.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Fubara stated, “October 1st, 1960, remains a historic day when Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, raised the green-white-green flag, marking our independence from British colonial rule. Since then, many brave leaders have made sacrifices to uphold our freedom and unity.”

While acknowledging the efforts of past and present leaders in maintaining the country’s unity, Fubara expressed regret that, 64 years after independence, Nigeria continues to struggle with issues such as insecurity and economic hardship.

“Despite these challenges, we still have reasons to celebrate. Nigerians are globally recognized for their resilience, cultural diversity, and resourcefulness. We must remain grateful for our achievements and continue to work towards building a nation where justice, peace, and prosperity prevail for all,” Fubara said.

He urged Nigerians to uphold the vision of the country’s founding fathers by fostering unity, peace, and justice. He called for collaboration between Nigerians and the federal government to address pressing political and economic issues such as corruption, nepotism, and insecurity.

“Only through our collective efforts can Nigeria reach its full potential and become a global leader,” the governor emphasized.

Fubara also commended President Tinubu for his commitment to economic reforms and called on other governors to ramp up efforts to combat insecurity, banditry, and oil theft, particularly in the Niger Delta, so that these reforms can bear fruit.

On the local front, Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State of his administration’s determination to enhance infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He pointed to key ongoing projects, including the Port Harcourt Ring Road, the Trans-Kalabari Road, and the rehabilitation of schools, hospitals, and the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

Additionally, Fubara praised the Armed Forces, Police, and other security agencies for their role in maintaining peace and security in Rivers State, pledging continued support for their efforts.
