90 Million Nigerians Face Looming Lung Cancer Threat from Firewood – Shocking Revelations Unveiled

“Approximately 90 million Nigerians face a heightened risk of lung cancer due to the widespread use of firewood for cooking, as per recent findings from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The NBS report highlights that 70% of Nigerians rely on solid cooking materials like firewood and charcoal, exposing the majority of households to significant health hazards, including respiratory illnesses and lung cancer.

Leading environmental health expert, Dr. Jane Akinyemi, emphasized the dangerous pollutants released when burning firewood, particularly impacting women and children. Minister for Environment, Ishaiq Adekunle Salako, likened daily firewood use to heavy smoking, emphasizing the risk of chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a shocking 93,300 deaths annually in Nigeria due to kitchen fire smoke, making it a leading cause of mortality, second only to diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Apart from health concerns, traditional cooking methods contribute to deforestation and habitat destruction due to excessive firewood harvesting, particularly in rural communities lacking access to modern cooking appliances.

While some families turn to firewood due to economic constraints, it is crucial to acknowledge the associated health risks and environmental consequences. To address this issue, a shift towards cleaner and more efficient cooking technologies, such as clean-burning stoves and alternative fuels, is essential. Communities embracing these changes are paving the way for a healthier, greener future, safeguarding public health, protecting the environment, and combating climate change.”
