A report claiming that Brigadier General Ibrahim Shuaibu, director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has plans to Islamize the Benue orientation camp, has been dismissed by the scheme.

The dismissal was in reaction to a statement by a group under the auspices of the Coalition for Peace and Justice.

Daybreak.ng gathers that the Coalition for Peace and Justice alleged that Shuaibu had ordered the Benue state coordinator of the NYSC to build a mosque in the camp immediately, after expressing anger that the facility had none.

In a statement released by Adenike Adeyemi, NYSC’s director of press and public relations, Adeyemi claims that Shuaibu’s instruction was aimed at ensuring adequate welfare for the corps members and making sure that all groups were able to worship under structures built for such purpose and were not exposed to harsh weather conditions.

“When we visited the camp, the DG observed the three associations worshiping in the open space. He, therefore, instructed the state coordinator to provide spaces for them, as those worshiping should have a structure under which they should worship.

“The instruction was therefore, targeted toward the welfare of the corps members.” she said.

Adeyemi pointed out that all faiths were recognized by the NYSC; and that the scheme even allowed the National Association of Catholic Corpers (NACC), Nigerian Christian Corpers Fellowship (NCCF) and Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN) to operate without being hindered in the camp.

“In fact, it wasn’t only Muslim Corpers Association of Nigeria (MCAN) that he saw that day. He was only concern about the welfare of the corps members without prejudice as the scheme does not favour any religion against another.” she said.

She stressed that the NYSC DG never issued such declaration as claimed by the Coalition for Peace and Justice, when he visited the camp.

Adeyemi urged mischief makers to leave the NYSC out of any religious, political or ethnic sentiment.
