Women Group Hails Tobi Amusan’s Newly Acquired World Fame

From Rhoda Godwin

Women group under the auspices of Standup for Women Society (SWS) has congratulated Oluwatobi Amusan’s newly hard-fought fame in the world of athletics where she made history by becoming Nigeria’s first ever gold winner at the World Athletics Championships.

Amusan, 25, a student of the University of Texas at El Paso, had an excellent performance at the world tourney representing her fatherland, Nigeria, after she set a record time in the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles event with 12.12 seconds. This broke the 12.20 record of America’s Kendra Harrison, who finished behind Amusan at second place.

A statement by the President of Standup for Women Society, Barr. Abosede D. Ijadele-Adetona said the Society is so proud of the feat recorded by Amusan at the Oregon, USA tournament, which had since attracted accolades and commendations across the the globe.

“As a Society of women emancipation, we are so proud of our girl for doing the nation and the entire black race proud. What Tobi did also give credence to the fact that the place of women cannot be reduced to mere rhetoric in our nation, while we believe that the women should be seen as an integral part of the nation building,” Barr. Ijadele-Adetona said.

The World Athletics rewarded Amusan, who President Muhammadu Buhari described as the Nigeria’s Golden Girl, with the sum of N65m for breaking the World Record at World Athletics Championships.

“We can all see how it is good to work hard in life and it pays off putting one’s energy in whatever you know how to do best. No doubt, there is handsome reward for hardwork. I want to call on all Nigerian women to be steadfast, especially our young girls across the country, to take a cue from the life of Tobi. They should strive to be focused and be committed to whatever they are doing,” Ijadele-Adetona said.

It’s reports that Standup for Women Society is a networking forum created as an umbrella to promote women affairs and influence the minds, actions and practices of the general public at various government levels to support and ensure fair share responsibilities to women.

The Society is also out to enhance and encourage women to have self confidence, freedom of choice; freedom from violence and attack. In achieving our goals, no woman or girl would be left behind.
