Investigation Ordered by Cross River State Governor Following Boat Crash that Leaves Three Students Missing

Efforts are underway to locate three medical students who went missing after a boat they were traveling on crashed in the Calabar area of Cross River on Saturday. The Nigerian Navy, along with other security agencies and local divers, are engaged in a rescue operation. So far, 11 students have been rescued from the ill-fated boat.

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has expressed his concern over the incident and attributed the crash to overcrowding. He has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. Governor Otu expressed disappointment at the lack of safety standards at the Marina Resort and vowed to take strict action against those responsible for the incident.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, Governor Otu expressed his sadness and concern as both a governor and a parent. He emphasized the need for the state government to investigate the incident and ensure that those who compromised on safety standards face legal consequences. Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and creating an environment conducive to business, tourism, and peaceful living. Any actions that could hinder these objectives will not be tolerated.

Governor Otu provided an update on the rescued students, mentioning that all except one have been discharged from the hospital. He expressed optimism about the remaining victim’s recovery, as doctors have reported positive responses to the ongoing treatment.

The swift response and rescue efforts by the Nigerian Navy personnel and local villagers have been commended by Governor Otu. The medical students were in Calabar to participate in the Nigeria Medical Students Games when the tragic incident occurred over the weekend.
