Enugu Government Takes Action: Schools and Markets Face Closure for Observing 1-Week Sit-at-Home Order

Enugu State Government Takes Action Against Illegal Sit-at-Home Order: Schools and Markets Face Consequences

The Enugu State Government has been made aware of reports circulating on social media, stating that private school owners are instructing their students not to attend classes due to an unauthorized one-week sit-at-home order declared by unidentified individuals in the state.

The government expresses deep concern and disappointment regarding this matter and issues a stern warning that any school failing to resume normal operations from today will have its license immediately revoked.

Market unions and shop owners in the state are also given the same warning. All markets and shops must open to customers from today, or they will face indefinite closure.

The government emphasizes its prohibition of any form of illegal sit-at-home order in all parts of the state, as it goes against the core values of the Igbo people, such as industry, hard work, creativity, and productivity, which we hold dear.

The public is urged to continue with their daily activities as adequate security measures have been implemented to safeguard lives and property.

The government will no longer tolerate faceless groups and misguided individuals dictating how we lead our lives, determine work and market schedules, or decide when our children attend school. We will confront and overcome this with all the power and resources at our disposal.

The State Government also warns that it will employ the full force of the law, including the Cybercrime Act 2015, to pursue and prosecute anyone intentionally promoting the illegal sit-at-home order, spreading fear among residents, or disseminating false information through platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, etc. It is essential to note that this action does not infringe upon citizens’ freedom of speech and information, as guaranteed by the constitution.

Professor Chidiebere Onyia
Secretary to the State Government
