Super Falcons of Nigeria Score Big: Earn N1.06 Billion for Advancing to Women’s World Cup Round of 16

By Daniel Edu

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have achieved a remarkable feat at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, earning an impressive $1,380,000 for reaching the round of 16. In Nigerian currency (Naira), this translates to a staggering N1.06 billion, based on the current exchange rate.

This year’s Women’s World Cup witnessed an expansion from 24 teams to a record 32 teams by FIFA, which also led to an increase in compensation for the players. FIFA President Gianni Infantino approved a substantial prize money of $110 million for the tournament, up from the $30 million in the previous edition held in France in 2019.

As per the new payout structure, each player making it to the group stage receives $30 million, while those whose teams progress to the round of 16 receive an additional $30 million each. Thanks to their commendable performance, the Super Falcons secured the second spot in Group B with a 0-0 draw against Canada, a thrilling 3-2 victory over Australia, and another goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland.

This achievement guarantees each member of the Super Falcons squad a $60,000 reward, equivalent to N46.2 million. As they continue to advance in the competition, they stand to earn an additional $30,000 with each step, potentially reaching an impressive $165,000 each if they make it to the semi-finals.

Should the Super Falcons triumph in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, each player will take home a phenomenal $270,000 as prize money. A second-place finish would earn them $195,000, while a third-place finish would still secure them a substantial $180,000 each. The Super Falcons have shown their prowess on the field, and their hard work is undoubtedly paying off in terms of both glory and financial rewards.
