The residents of Magboro in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State were plunged into sorrow on Saturday as a tragic accident unfolded. A truck, bearing registration number TTD-643ZY, lost control and veered into Magboro market, resulting in the death of a pregnant woman and injuring her two-year-old child.
The incident occurred due to a brake failure experienced by the truck’s driver, which led to him losing control of the vehicle.
Upon visiting the scene at around 10:40 am, our correspondent observed that the truck had also collided with a car, with a motorcycle trapped beneath it.
The pregnant woman had reportedly come to the market to purchase foodstuffs before the tragic accident occurred.
An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the horrific event, stating, “She was the first person to see the truck coming. As the truck was coming uncontrollably, the pregnant woman was trying to run away with her little child, but the gown she wore hindered her from running faster. So, she fell, and the truck climbed on her.”
Another witness mentioned that the motorcyclist, whose motorcycle became stuck under the truck, narrowly escaped death by leaping off his motorcycle.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident and mentioned that they would provide a report once they completed the rescue operation.
However, at the time of reporting, there were no further updates available, as attempts to reach the spokesperson were unsuccessful, with calls going unanswered and text messages remaining unresponded to.
