By  Milcah  Tanimu

Akwa Ibom’s Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has warmly congratulated John Obot for his remarkable achievement in breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest individual hours spent reading. Notably, John Obot extended the record from 124 hours to an impressive 153 hours.

In a congratulatory message conveyed on his behalf by Chief Press Secretary Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno expressed his admiration for Mr. Obot’s incredible feat.

“This accomplishment exemplifies what each of us can achieve in our respective fields with the right combination of discipline, mindset, determination, and unwavering focus. It embodies the essence of the Akwa Ibom spirit: resilience, determination, a ‘can-do’ attitude, and an ardent passion for excellence.”

The Governor also mentioned his anticipation of celebrating John Obot and other local heroes and heroines during the forthcoming 36th State Anniversary.

John Obot, a professional teacher, embarked on this extraordinary endeavor at Watbridge Hotel, located along IBB Avenue in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, on September 12th. Throughout this journey, various personalities, including dignitaries from both within and outside the state, visited to show their support and solidarity.

The event witnessed joyous celebrations from spectators, both within the venue and in the overflow area. John Obot also took a few moments to exchange greetings and capture snapshots with the dignitaries present to witness his historic achievement.

Among the over 40 books that Mr. Obot read aloud during this six-day marathon reading session were notable works like “Echoes of The Traditional Society” by renowned Nigerian journalist Akpandem James, “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, “Civil War Child” by Nestor Udoh, “Ibibio Nation: History and Culture” by Oto-Obong Uwah, “Eze Goes to School” by Michael Crowder and Onuora Nzekwu, and “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, among others.

John Obot explained that he undertook this extraordinary challenge to draw attention to the declining reading culture, especially among Nigerian youths, and to encourage authors to continue their valuable contributions to the world of literature.
