Top 10 African Countries with the Highest Life Expectancy

By Daniel Edu

The journey of life is characterized by its inherent unpredictability. None of us can truly foresee the duration of our existence, and while the destination is certain, the timing remains an enigmatic mystery.

At the core of this intricate narrative lies the concept of life expectancy, a profound metric that provides valuable insights into the overall health and well-being of a population. It serves as a guiding light, navigating us through the ebbs and flows of existence, quantifying the average number of years a person born in a specific region can anticipate living under current circumstances. Crucially, increases in life expectancy, though limited to certain countries, mark significant progress.

Consider Africa as an illustration; the continent has witnessed an average increase of 10 years in life expectancy over the past two decades, as reported by the United Nations. This substantial rise during this period stands as a testament to the region’s concerted efforts to enhance the health and well-being of its population.

According to the United Nations’ World Population Prospect for 2022, a newborn in Algeria can anticipate a life expectancy of over 77 years. Cabo Verde, Tunisia, and Mauritius closely follow with a life expectancy of 76 years.

Here are the top 10 African countries with the highest life expectancy, based on the United Nations’ data:

Rank Country Life Expectancy
1 Algeria 77 years
2 Cabo Verde 76 years
3 Tunisia 76 years
4 Morocco 75 years
5 Mauritius 75 years
6 Seychelles 75 years
7 Libya 73 years
8 Western Sahara 71 years
9 Egypt 70 years
10 Senegal 69 years
