UK Interior Minister Braverman Dismissed in Cabinet Reshuffle

By Milcah Tanimu

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has removed controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman as part of a broader reshuffle ahead of an anticipated general election next year. Braverman, known for her outspoken right-wing stance, faced mounting criticism for her handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in the UK, with accusations that her actions escalated tensions.

It remains unclear who will succeed Braverman, who assumed the position when Sunak took office just over a year ago. Following her dismissal, Braverman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as home secretary and indicated that she would provide further remarks in due course.

The decision comes as the ruling Conservatives confirmed a significant reshuffle of Sunak’s top ministers, marking his first since assuming leadership on October 25, 2022. The party announced the changes on social media, suggesting a focus on strengthening the government team to make long-term decisions for a brighter future.

Throughout her tenure, Braverman courted controversy by taking a hardline stance on immigration and frequently engaging in divisive “culture wars” issues. She referred to her critics as the liberal “tofu-eating wokerati” and, upon her appointment, expressed her aspiration to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. However, her position became increasingly precarious after she wrote a contentious newspaper article without Sunak’s approval, accusing the police of bias toward left-wing causes. The article was deemed responsible for escalating tensions ahead of weekend protests related to Israel’s actions in Gaza, prompting calls for her dismissal.
