Wike’s N5bn Deal: FCT NUT Suspends Strike, Orders Teachers Back Monday

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has suspended its strike, directing primary and secondary school teachers across the Federal Capital Territory to resume duties on Monday, April 27.

The decision was reached after an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) on Sunday at the Teachers’ House, Gwagwalada, after reviewing commitments by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike with N5 billion monthly bailout.

Wike said he would engage the FCT Civil Service Commission and revert to the union to solve the disputed promotion policy on vacancy requirment.

SWEC described the government’s response as a significant step and resolved to suspend the strike with immediate effect.

The council directed teachers to return to classrooms on Monday, warning that failure by the FCT Administration to implement the agreement could trigger a fresh action.

It also cautioned against victimisation of participating teachers and commended members for their solidarity, reaffirming its commitment to improved welfare and working
