Residents Report Security Concerns in Kogi East Communities, Seek Government Intervention

From Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

Residents in parts of Kogi East Senatorial District have raised concerns over the presence of unfamiliar groups in several communities, calling for increased security monitoring and government intervention. Communities in Ofu, Dekina, Idah, and Igalamela/Odolu local government areas reported sightings of new settlers in forested areas and farmlands.

Some residents said the development has created anxiety among farmers, especially during the planting season. A local security group, Kogi East Neighbourhood Watch (KENW), confirmed receiving reports from residents and described the situation as a concern that requires attention from relevant authorities.

The group called on the Kogi State Government, security agencies, and traditional leaders to assess the situation, verify the identities of the individuals involved, and take appropriate steps to maintain public safety. Residents also appealed to their elected representatives to support efforts aimed at protecting lives and property in the area

.Separately, local sources reported the abduction of a traditional ruler in Ofu Local Government Area by unidentified gunmen. There was also a reported killing of a farmer in another community, according to eyewitness accounts. Authorities have not yet issued official statements on the incidents. Community leaders urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to address the concerns continue.
