Emeka Ike Opens Up About Marital Struggles and Career Hiatus Due to Depression

By Daniel Edu

Renowned Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike, recently revealed the challenges he faced during a prolonged period of depression, citing marital issues and exclusion from the film industry as significant factors. In an interview on the show “Rubbin’ Minds” hosted by Hero Daniels on Channels Television, Emeka Ike candidly discussed the reasons behind his absence from the screen.

The veteran actor disclosed that his battle with depression was rooted in both marital problems and conflicts within the Nollywood industry. His marriage officially ended in 2015, following allegations of constant battery, which led to its dissolution by a Lagos Island Customary Court. Emeka Ike admitted that the shame associated with his personal struggles contributed to his decision to stay away from the public eye.

Emeka Ike also highlighted the shift in the film industry from VCD to larger screens as a factor that affected the demand for his skills. According to him, the exclusion of certain actors, including himself, during this transition contributed to their reduced involvement in movie projects.

During his hiatus, Emeka Ike faced not only professional challenges but also threats to his life from unknown sources. He mentioned receiving threats from assassins and gunmen without any apparent reason, adding an extra layer of difficulty to his already troubled period.

However, Emeka Ike has since made a comeback in the Nollywood scene, breaking his silence and resuming his acting career. He emphasized the importance of self-improvement and perseverance in overcoming challenging experiences, stating, “I just kept doing the things I needed to do properly. I kept working on myself to be who I am now.”

Emeka Ike is set to feature in the upcoming movie ‘Malaika,’ led by Toyin Abraham, marking his return to the industry after a period of personal and professional challenges.
