Bandit Threat Causes Fear in Nasarawa Community

Residents of Gandu community, home to over 6,000 students of the Federal University of Lafia, are in a state of confusion and panic due to a threat letter allegedly sent by bandits. The letter warned of impending killings as the bandits claimed they were no longer interested in ransom demands. This follows a series of kidnappings, with at least 12 students abducted between October and December 2023. A recent protest by over 500 students urged an end to the violence. The threat has raised concerns, prompting security meetings by both the university and local authorities to address the situation and enhance safety measures. The state government has allocated funds for security equipment and surveillance in response to the rising insecurity. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, and stakeholders emphasize the need for collective responsibility in securing lives and property in the region. The police response to inquiries about the situation is currently unavailable.
