Repentant terrorists swore by Quran, can’t return to killings – Borno

The Borno State government reaffirmed on Wednesday that the 160,000 repentant Boko Haram insurgents are committed to peace as they swore an oath on the Quran. Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, emphasized that of the 160,000 who have renounced violence, 70,000 have successfully reintegrated into their communities.

Addressing concerns about potential relapses into violence, Gambo assured the public that the repentant insurgents had made a solemn pledge, backed by the Quran, never to return to conflict. She spoke at a public event organized by the Maiduguri-based NGO, Allamin Foundation, aimed at showcasing survivors, victims, and deradicalized women of Boko Haram.

Gambo dismissed fears of a resurgence of terror in the North-East, asserting that the reintegration process is transparent and closely monitored. She highlighted the rigorous procedures, including oath-taking ceremonies with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and government officials present, to ensure the repentant insurgents uphold their commitment to peace.

According to Gambo, the majority of repentant insurgents were originally farmers coerced into insurgency, rather than dedicated fighters. She emphasized the state government’s commitment to addressing the needs of survivors and victims, as outlined in a comprehensive charter developed in collaboration with various stakeholders.

While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Gambo underscored the government’s determination to support the reintegration process and pave the way for a prosperous future for all involved.
