Enugu State Authorities Shut Down ShopRite, SPAR, and Others for Tax Evasion

Enugu ShopRite and SPAR, along with other businesses, have been sealed by the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service for failing to remit purchase taxes to the government.

According to a statement from the service, the affected malls and stores had been warned multiple times but did not comply with the tax regulations.

Among the sealed establishments were Roban Stores and Mama Onyinye restaurant, all accused of withholding purchase taxes.

Perpetual Egwuonwu, spokesperson for ESIRS, stated that despite repeated visits and pleas to remit taxes, the affected businesses failed to comply.

While some businesses, like Roban Stores, have since complied after discussions, ShopRite has not responded satisfactorily, frustrating enforcement efforts.

Egwuonwu emphasized that the closures would persist until tax-related issues were resolved.

ESIRS also highlighted ongoing public enlightenment efforts to encourage tax compliance, noting that enforcement actions were taken as a last resort.
