Soldiers’ Killing: Delta Community and Army Clash Over Reprisals, 20 Arrested

The Nigerian Army has refuted claims of reprisal attacks on the Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where military personnel were recently killed. Denying any form of reprisal, the Army accused the community of resorting to propaganda tactics. Meanwhile, approximately 20 suspects have been apprehended in connection with the incident.

The Defence Headquarters also released the names of the Army personnel who lost their lives during the communal clash in Okuama. The military condemned the attack and emphasized its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice, warning that there would be serious consequences for those involved.

However, a community leader, speaking anonymously, accused the military of carrying out mass arrests and killings instead of targeting the actual culprits. He likened the situation to the infamous Odi incident in 1999 and raised concerns about innocent civilians being targeted by soldiers.

Reports also emerged of soldiers allegedly burning houses in Okuama, prompting residents to flee the community. The clash, which erupted over a land dispute, resulted in the deaths of at least 17 military personnel.

Despite the military’s denial of reprisal attacks, tension remains high in Okuama, with residents fleeing to neighboring communities for safety. The Ijaw Youth Council condemned the killings and called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, soldiers reportedly invaded the Igbomotoru community in Bayelsa State, causing panic and destruction. While the reason for their presence remains unclear, the incident has further escalated tensions in the region.

As the situation unfolds, efforts are underway to address the root causes of the conflict and restore peace to the affected communities.
