Copa America Chaos: Darwin Nunez Among 11 Players Under Investigation After Brawl

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is one of 11 players being investigated after a brawl broke out following Uruguay’s defeat to Colombia in the Copa America. Despite the altercation, Nunez is expected to avoid immediate punishment.

The incident occurred in North Carolina, where tensions ran high after the semi-final match. Nunez was seen climbing into the stands to confront Colombia supporters, leading to a physical clash involving both fans and players. Security intervened as Nunez was struck in the head by a fan, and families of the players were moved to safety on the pitch.

South America’s governing body, CONMEBOL, condemned the violence and confirmed an investigation. “We want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration,” the organization stated.

Uruguayan outlet El Observador reported that Nunez and ten other players are under investigation. However, Nunez will be available for Uruguay’s third-place playoff against Canada this weekend, with all statements due by July 17.

Other players under investigation include Ronald Araujo, Mathias Olivera, Rodrigo Bentancur, Santiago Mele, Sebastian Caceres, Emiliano Martinez, Matias Vine, Brian Rodriguez, Jose Maria Gimenez, and Facundo Pellistri.

Uruguayan FA president Ignacio Alonso defended the players’ actions, citing their natural instinct to protect their families amid the chaos. “The Uruguayan players had an instinctive, natural reaction, which was to defend the children who were being attacked, their wives, parents, siblings. It was a natural, instinctive reaction that was rational given the events that were taking place.”

The situation was quickly managed, with evacuation protocols followed to ensure everyone’s safety. Alonso assured that no one was in immediate difficulty and that appropriate measures were taken for their transport.
