Eguavoen Steps Down as Nigeria Coach for AFCON Qualifiers

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Nigeria’s interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has confirmed that he will not be in charge for the Super Eagles’ upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Libya scheduled for October. Eguavoen, who also serves as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), revealed that his temporary role with the team is coming to an end.

Eguavoen was appointed to oversee two games, and he expressed satisfaction with his tenure. “I was given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys and grateful to the NFF leadership and all the players for their discipline and hard work,” Eguavoen stated, according to Own Goal.

He further clarified that while he won’t be present for the Libya games, he remains open to offering support. “It ends today, which is the two games mandate. I can provide insights and information that could be useful for overcoming Libya,” he added.

Nigeria had initially planned to appoint former German international Bruno Labbadia as head coach, but the deal fell through due to tax irregularities. Consequently, Eguavoen was asked to step in on an interim basis.

The Super Eagles maintained their lead in Group D with a draw against Rwanda, securing four points. As Nigeria prepares for the crucial qualifiers, the search for a new coach continues.
