5 Home Exercises to Reduce Leg Swelling

Here are some simple exercises you can do at home to reduce leg swelling.

Leg or foot swelling, also known as peripheral edema, occurs when fluid accumulates in the legs, feet, and ankles. This often happens when small blood vessels leak fluid into nearby tissues, causing the area to swell. Prolonged inactivity can contribute to swelling, but regular, simple exercises can help reduce it by improving circulation and moving excess fluid out of the legs.

Here are five easy exercises that can help:

1. **Walking**
Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce leg swelling. A 10- to 15-minute walk improves blood flow and helps reduce inflammation and fluid retention in the legs.

2. **Knee Extension Kicks**
To perform this exercise, lie on your back with your knees bent and feet lifted off the ground. Straighten one leg and kick it upward, then alternate with the other leg. Repeat for 5 minutes. This exercise strengthens your leg muscles and improves lymphatic drainage, which helps remove excess fluid.

3. **Lying Down Trunk Rotation**
This exercise reduces resistance in the blood vessels of the legs. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Slowly rotate your upper body to one side while keeping your shoulders pressed down. Hold for a few seconds, return to the center, and then rotate to the other side. Repeat for several minutes to strengthen your core.

4. **Squats**
Squats can help strengthen your calf muscles and reduce fluid buildup in the legs. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees as if sitting down, and keep your back straight. Push through your heels to return to a standing position. Perform about 10 squats.

5. **Seated Calf Raises**
This exercise promotes blood circulation, reducing swelling in the feet. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slowly raise your heels off the ground, hold for a few seconds, then lower them back down. Repeat 10 times. This can be done anywhere and anytime to help pump blood back to your heart.

Swelling in the feet and legs can cause discomfort, but these exercises are helpful in reducing the swelling. If your condition doesn’t improve, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
