Nigerian Army’s Acquisition Plans

The Nigerian Army is close to acquiring four Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) from India, significantly enhancing its military capabilities. According to Financial Express, the army established a soft credit arrangement for this first export order from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Finalizing Discussions

Officials from HAL and the Nigerian Army are finalizing discussions, and they expect to reach an agreement soon. Recently, a group of Nigerian Army officers completed training on HAL’s Dhruv helicopters, preparing them to operate the upcoming LCH.

Features of the Light Combat Helicopter

The LCH is an advanced variant of the Dhruv, and the Indian Air Force inducted it in November 2021. The helicopter performs well at altitudes up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) and in extreme weather conditions. This twin-engine attack helicopter weighs between five and eight tons and carries air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, a 20-millimeter gun, and 70-millimeter rockets. Additionally, the LCH boasts an enhanced electronic warfare suite, directional infrared countermeasures, and an anti-radiation missile.

Versatile Roles and Applications

The LCH offers high agility and maneuverability, making it suitable for various roles such as combat search and rescue, destroying enemy air defenses, and conducting counter-insurgency operations.

Broader Military Procurement

In a broader context, Nigeria has also announced plans to acquire 50 military aircraft to strengthen its counterterrorism efforts against Islamic insurgents and armed bandits. This procurement includes 12 AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters and 12 AW109 multi-purpose helicopters, with deliveries set to begin next year.
