N/Assembly to Provide Legal Framework for Nigeria-China Agreements – Speaker Abbas

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., has assured that the Nigerian National Assembly will establish the necessary legislative framework to support the implementation of the agreements recently reached between Nigeria and China.

Speaking at a reception in Abuja on Friday to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Speaker Abbas praised the strengthening relationship between the two nations, describing the partnership as one built on “mutual respect and shared aspirations.”

Abbas highlighted the significance of the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which he described as a “beacon of hope for continued collaboration.” He emphasized that the agreements reached between Nigeria and China during the forum, attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reflect a renewed commitment to bolstering bilateral ties.

“These agreements will pave the way for further investments in critical sectors such as energy production and technology transfer, which are vital for Nigeria’s sustainable development. The National Assembly will provide the necessary legislative framework to support the implementation of these agreements,” Abbas said.

The Speaker also lauded China’s remarkable transformation since its founding in 1949, acknowledging the country’s rise from an agrarian society to becoming the second-largest economy in the world. “China’s journey is a testament to resilience and visionary leadership,” he added.

Abbas noted the deepening relationship between Nigeria and China, highlighting the invaluable support China has extended to Nigeria’s infrastructural projects, including the construction of railways and roads, which have enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and job creation.

He also commended China’s legislative body, the National People’s Congress (NPC), for demonstrating how a robust legislative framework can drive national development. He expressed optimism that by fostering a collaborative relationship with the NPC, Nigeria could exchange ideas and best practices to enhance its own legislative processes.

The Speaker further announced the formation of the China-Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, aimed at exploring areas of collaboration in sectors such as trade, technology transfer, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange.

“In learning from China’s experience in leveraging its legislature for national advancement, we can better position ourselves to address the challenges facing our country,” Abbas concluded.
