Ex-Sweden Coach Janne Andersson Explains Rejection of Super Eagles Job

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Former Sweden coach Janne Andersson has revealed why he turned down an offer to lead Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Despite persistent efforts from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to recruit him, he ultimately declined the position, according to reports from Soccernet.ng.

At 62, Andersson has been without a coaching role since stepping down as head coach of Sweden’s national team nearly a year ago. During this time, he engaged in serious talks with both Nigeria and Latvia but decided to reject both offers.

Nigeria approached Andersson after Finidi George resigned as head coach following a brief tenure. However, discussions did not lead to a formal agreement.

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper *Hallandsposten*, Andersson explained his decision, stating, “I have received several inquiries during the year. Some I have said no to, while others I listened to, but they didn’t lead anywhere. Then I received two concrete offers from Latvia and Nigeria, which I chose to turn down.”

Regarding Nigeria’s offer, Andersson acknowledged their persistence. He said, “Nigeria was very persistent and wanted me to take the national team job. There was a lot that was appealing, but the overall situation wasn’t great. It didn’t feel 100 percent right, and it has to, for me to fully commit.”

Despite rejecting the position, Andersson remains open to future coaching opportunities. However, he is cautious about his next move, stating, “It would take quite a lot for me to take a new coaching job. I’m quite picky and have some other things going on,” hinting at possible non-coaching roles like mentorships and board positions.

As it stands, Nigeria’s national team continues its search for a new head coach. In the interim, former international Augustine Eguavoen has stepped in as caretaker coach. He impressed with a victory over Benin Republic and a goalless draw with Rwanda last month. Eguavoen will lead the team in their upcoming doubleheader against Libya this week.
