Fire Ravages Yobe Market, Millions Lost in Damages

By Abigail Philip David

An early morning fire on Tuesday devastated the Bayan Tasha market in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, leaving residents in disarray.

The inferno, which began around 2 a.m., destroyed goods and property worth millions of naira, affecting about 50 shops and kiosks. Swift action by the fire service prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby residential areas, minimizing further damage.

According to eyewitnesses, a distress call was made as soon as the fire started, enabling firefighters to respond promptly and contain the situation.

During an on-site assessment, Mohammed Goje, the Executive Director of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), sympathized with affected traders and assured them of the government’s support in addressing the losses.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined as investigations are ongoing.
