Nigeria has further solidified its leadership role in the global energy sector with the appointment of Mr. Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as Chairman of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Board of Governors for 2025.

The announcement was made during the 189th meeting of the OPEC Conference, held on Tuesday. According to a statement published on OPEC’s official website, Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment was confirmed alongside the designation of Eng. Adeeb Al-Aama, Saudi Arabia’s OPEC Governor, as Alternate Chairman for the same period.

Before this role, Adeyemi-Bero was Nigeria’s confirmed OPEC Governor for 2025. His new position underscores Nigeria’s strategic influence within OPEC and highlights the country’s ongoing commitment to shaping global energy policies.

In a congratulatory message, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), praised Adeyemi-Bero’s elevation as a reflection of Nigeria’s active contribution to the global oil industry. Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, the minister emphasized that the appointment provides Nigeria with a vital platform to advocate for fair energy policies that benefit both producers and consumers worldwide.

The minister also extended gratitude to Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his dedicated service. Aduda was recognized for his instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and enhancing the nation’s presence in global energy discussions.

During the conference, representatives from OPEC member countries reviewed reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board, addressing critical internal matters. Notably, the conference extended the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary-General for an additional three years, effective August 1, 2025. Member nations lauded his leadership and the Secretariat’s dedication to the organization’s goals.
