Senator Lalong Urges Minister of Power to Address Plateau South and Central Electrification Challenges

By Dr. Makut Simon Macham, Special Adviser (Media)

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District, has voiced strong concerns over the persistent neglect of Plateau South and Central zones in Nigeria’s electrification efforts. Speaking during the Senate’s budget defense session with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Senator Lalong described the lack of power supply to these regions as unacceptable.

Call for Immediate Action

Senator Lalong emphasized that the prolonged absence of electricity has stifled economic growth for about 70% of Plateau State. He called on the Minister of Power to urgently fulfill the promises made by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and ensure the regions are connected to the national grid.

Efforts During Governorship

Recalling his tenure as Governor of Plateau State, Senator Lalong highlighted efforts made to address the issue, including paying compensation to landowners, relocating properties along the power corridor, and providing other necessary support. Despite these initiatives, the situation remains unresolved.

Economic Opportunities at Stake

He stressed that Plateau South and Central zones are predominantly agrarian and highly productive, but their potential remains untapped due to the lack of power infrastructure. Senator Lalong urged the federal government to end this neglect, unlocking economic opportunities for the region’s residents.

Commitment to Legislative Oversight

The Senator assured that the Senate would appropriate necessary funds and intensify oversight to ensure the Renewed Hope administration delivers on its promises to the people of Plateau State.

Other Legislative Engagements

Senator Lalong also participated in the budget defense sessions of the Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, where he serves as Vice Chairman, as well as the Committees on Navy and Finance. He reiterated the importance of adequate funding for the judiciary to maintain its independence and efficiency.

This advocacy underscores Senator Lalong’s commitment to addressing the infrastructural and economic challenges facing Plateau South and Central zones.
