North West Governors Declare Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The North West Governors Forum has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday across the region’s seven states in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital.

This was announced in a statement signed by the Forum’s Chairman and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda. The governors expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing, describing him as “our father, our leader, and the pride of the Northwest.”

“The Northwest Governors Forum received with shock and deep sorrow the news of the passing of our beloved former President, General Muhammadu Buhari,” Radda stated. “He lived a life of service, integrity, and sacrifice for the betterment of Nigeria.”

According to the statement, the decision to declare a public holiday was unanimously agreed upon by all seven governors as a sign of respect and tribute to the late statesman.

Buhari’s remains are expected to arrive in Katsina, his home state, by noon on Tuesday, with burial rites scheduled for 2 p.m. in accordance with Islamic traditions.

Governor Radda called on all Nigerians to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul and extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the late president’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss.

General Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Army officer, first served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a civilian President from 2015 to 2023. He was widely regarded for his disciplined leadership style and strong anti-corruption stance, making him a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history.

State burial arrangements in his hometown of Daura are underway, with dignitaries expected from across the country and beyond.
