Flood Alert: Federal Government Warns 11 States of Imminent Flooding in July

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 11 states across Nigeria, warning of potential flood disasters between July 16 and 20, 2025.

The warning was issued through the ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre in Abuja. The alert, signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi, urged state governments and relevant stakeholders to take immediate precautionary measures to reduce the risk and impact of potential flooding.

According to the ministry, heavy rainfall capable of triggering floods is expected in parts of Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Bauchi, Plateau, Yobe, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Cross River, and Zamfara states.

Specific flood-prone areas identified include:

  • Adamawa: Mubi
  • Akwa Ibom: Edor, Upenekang, Oron, Eket
  • Plateau: Jos, Bukuru, Mangu
  • Yobe: Jakusko, Machina, Dapchi
  • Katsina: Daura
  • Kano: Kunchi, Kano, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, Tudun Wada
  • Jigawa: Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, Dutse
  • Cross River: Calabar, Akamkpa
  • Zamfara: Bungudu, Gusau

The ministry called on local authorities to intensify monitoring, sensitize residents, and ensure effective drainage management in vulnerable communities. Stakeholders on the FEWS platform were also urged to provide timely feedback on flood situations in their areas.

Authorities reiterated the importance of proactive efforts in mitigating the loss of lives and property during the forecasted period.
