Tinubu Flags Off Construction of Benue’s First Flyover

By Isaac Kertyo, Makurdi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged off the construction of Benue State’s first flyover at the Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, a key component of the second phase of the Makurdi–9th Mile dualization project.

Represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, the President described the project as one of the largest legacy initiatives under his administration. Spanning 260 kilometres—520 kilometres in dual carriage terms—the project is estimated to cost $950 million and will be funded by the China Exim Bank.

“This flyover project was never in the initial budget, but it is a gift from Mr. President to Governor Hyacinth Alia. It will serve as a catalyst for economic revolution for Benue, Enugu, and the entire region. We assure you of the highest quality, and we will ensure timely delivery,” Umahi said on behalf of the President.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the government and people of Benue for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth take-off of the project. “The Federal Government alone cannot construct all federal roads, so when governors take responsibility, it shows their love for their people,” he added.

In his remarks, Governor Hyacinth Alia described the project as a game changer that would transform agriculture, transportation, and trade across the state and beyond.

“As one who studied and grew up in Makurdi, I know how critical this road is. It links the Northeast to the South-South and the Southeast. Farmers will now be able to move their produce easily, even fresh vegetables, from Makurdi to Abuja and other regions without heavy post-harvest losses,” the governor said.

Alia also thanked President Tinubu for what he described as “one of the many gifts to Benue State within two years.” He noted that his administration had complemented federal efforts by rehabilitating sections of the Makurdi–Gboko road with state resources.
