Principal Urges Parents to Monitor Children’s Activities to Curb Social Vices

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Principal of GYB Model Science Secondary School (GYBMSSS) Lokoja, Chief Yakubu Godwins, has called on parents to take active responsibility in monitoring their children’s activities to secure their future and prevent them from engaging in social vices.

Speaking during an orientation programme for new students on Tuesday, Godwins emphasized that parents must work closely with schools to ensure their children grow into disciplined, responsible citizens.

He urged parents to pay attention to their children’s behaviour both within and outside school premises, stressing that education should go beyond academics to include moral upbringing and character development.

“Children must be punctual, regular, and of good moral character. Parents should collaborate with schools to nurture their wards into better individuals,” Godwins said.

The principal further appealed to parents and communities to value and appreciate teachers, noting that teachers play a crucial role in shaping the next generation. He added that the school’s mission goes beyond producing certificate holders to preparing students who will contribute meaningfully to society.

Godwins also encouraged parents to provide their children with necessary textbooks and learning materials, and to support the school’s vision of raising future leaders of excellence and integrity.

While expressing appreciation to the Kogi State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Godwins commended the administration for providing modern infrastructure, qualified teachers, and enhanced security to ensure a conducive learning environment at the school.

The orientation event featured several educational sessions, including a presentation on “Proper Channels of Communication” by the Vice Principal (Administration), Mrs. Ladi Ameji, and another on “Upholding Integrity and Good Conduct” by the Vice Principal (Academic I), Mr. Benson Ugwoke, who urged students to maintain self-respect and become role models in their communities.

Parents in attendance commended the school management and teachers for their dedication to nurturing well-rounded students who excel in both character and academics.

The Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Pastor Zadrach Igiku, also appealed to parents to give their full support to the school in raising godly and responsible children who will make the nation proud.
