FUL VC Applauds Prof. Olu Obafemi for Using Literature as a Tool for Social Reform

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja (FUL), Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, has described renowned playwright and scholar, Prof. Olu Obafemi, as a literary icon who has effectively used literature as an instrument for social reform and national consciousness.

Prof. Akinwumi made the remark during the 3rd Colloquium held in honour of Prof. Obafemi at the university’s Felele Campus on Friday, as part of activities marking the 9th Convocation Ceremony of the institution.

He said the colloquium represents one of the intellectual highlights of the convocation, aligning with the university’s vision of celebrating knowledge, excellence, and impactful scholarship.

According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Obafemi’s pioneering work in radical and ideological theatre has redefined the role of literature in challenging social injustice and promoting moral values.

“His conferment with the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM) — the highest national honour for intellectual achievement — is a testament to his monumental contributions to knowledge, culture, and humanity,” Akinwumi stated.

He thanked the distinguished speakers and participants whose contributions enriched the colloquium and reflected the high regard in which Prof. Obafemi is held across academic circles.

Delivering a paper titled “Agurumo on the Cross: The Social Vision and Revolutionary Aesthetics of Olu Obafemi,” Prof. Ayodele Anthony Bamidele of FUL’s Department of English described the honouree as an avowed realist who believes in the connection between art and society.

He noted that Prof. Obafemi’s literary works consistently advocate for a just and humane society, driven by his vision to end oppression and exploitation through socially committed art.

“What we have seen so far in Obafemi’s writings is his enduring struggle to eliminate every form of ‘Agurumo’ — that is, the structures that make life unbearable for the masses,” Bamidele said. “Though the journey is ongoing, his vision remains a guiding light.”

In his response, Prof. Olu Obafemi expressed deep gratitude to the university for organizing the colloquium in his honour, thanking the Vice Chancellor and all participants for their love and recognition.

“My joy knows no bounds seeing the overwhelming love and support shown to me today,” he said.
