Barcelona President Opens Up on Lionel Messi’s Possible Return and Planned Tribute Match

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has dismissed the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to play for the club, describing the idea as “unrealistic.” However, he confirmed that plans are underway to honour the Argentine legend with a special tribute match.

Messi, 37, sparked excitement among fans last week when he visited the Nou Camp and expressed his desire to return — “not just to say goodbye as a player.”

According to Naija News, Messi left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2021 after financial constraints prevented the renewal of his contract. He later joined Inter Miami in 2023, signing a deal that runs until 2028.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Laporta said:

“For me to make speculation that is unrealistic, nor do I think it is fair — I believe that is not appropriate.”

The Barcelona president admitted that Messi’s departure from the club was not how he had envisioned it, acknowledging that the situation left both the player and the fans with “unfinished business.”

While a comeback on the pitch seems unlikely, Laporta reaffirmed his commitment to giving Messi the farewell he truly deserves. He revealed that the club intends to host a grand tribute match once renovations at the Nou Camp are completed.

“It would be right that he has the best tribute in the world, and it would be wonderful to have it here, in front of 105,000 fans,” Laporta said.

Messi’s legacy at Barcelona remains unmatched. During his two-decade spell, he scored 672 goals in 778 appearances, winning 10 La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League trophies, and numerous other honours that cemented his status as one of the greatest footballers in history.
