The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, has has totally condemned the recent deadly attack at Government Girls School in Maga, Kebbi State, killing the vice principal and abducting 25 students.

The agency described the deadly incident as a grim reminder of the escalating risks children face in Nigeria’s conflict-burdened northwest.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, UNICEF urged authorities to ensure the immediate release of the abducted schoolgirls.

UNICEF demands that schools must remain protected civilian spaces under international humanitarian law.

“Students and educational facilities should be protected under international law from any form of attack. Those responsible must be held to account,” the agency stated.

UNICEF also underscored Nigeria’s endorsement of Safe Schools.

The declaration obligates it to implement stronger preventive measures during conflicts.

The organization said that it is expanding collaboration with government bodies, civil society, and communities to reinforce child-protection mechanisms.

“No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education,” the statement read.
